Frustrated islanders from Alif Dhaalu atoll Kunburudhoo occupied the island office on Tuesday in order to demand government action against coastal erosion as well as a bigger harbour.
The demonstration comes a week after 200 residents from Raa atoll Maduvvaree petitioned the government to protect their island from further beach erosion.Mohamed Shaheen, a civil servant, said the office was taken over by more than 50 men at 8am, who took it in turns to occupy the building. A carpenter living on the island, Hussain Habeeb, said his plot of land had suffered from erosion. more
