Hundreds of riot police and army personnel were dispatched to the streets of Male’ and Addu Atoll late on Tuesday, after the arrest of a Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) member sparked angry opposition protests. In the capital, scores of people took to the streets, chanting anti-government slogans in a demonstration that stretched well into the night. Protesters hurled bottles and stones at the lines of riot police, who sealed off the roads surrounding Republic Square and the Presidential Palace. more

Male’ Prepares For ‘Black Friday’ Remembrance
The final countdown has begun to what could be the biggest pro-democracy rally ever held in the history of the Maldives. Thousands of democracy supporters are expected to converge at the artificial beach in Male’ at 4:30pm today, as the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) commemorates the second anniversary of the brutal 2004 ‘Black Friday’ government crackdown.Speeches, music and video presentations on the theme of democratic empowerment will be on show.
